Announcement: I’m going to delete hate speech

By | February 10, 2016

It’s incredible to me that I even have to say this, but: If you post a comment to my blog that contains hate speech, I’m going to delete that comment immediately. Wikipedia describes “hate speech” as follows:

In law, hate speech is any speech, gesture or conduct, writing, or display which is forbidden because it may incite violence or prejudicial action against or by a protected individual or group, or because it disparages or intimidates a protected individual or group.

I consider hate speech to be any utterance that meets the following criteria:

a.) A reasonable person would interpret the utterance as misogynistic, racist, transphobic, homophobic, ableist, ageist, classist, or prejudiced against a historically marginalized or oppressed group; and

b.) A reasonable person would interpret the utterance as inciting real or symbolic violence against a member of a historically marginalized or oppressed group.

Recently, a male-identified commenter responded to an older post I wrote about my disappointment in Ani Difranco’s move away from feminism. He wrote, in part:

Not my style of music obviously but to read the horse shit you had the gaul to post here was infuriating. You have bastardized the word feminism and ought to be slapped with a limp penis.

Rape culture is alive and well, and sometimes it lands on my website.

In addition to the rampant misspellings and terrible grammar contained within this person’s post, the comment contained what I consider to be misogynistic hate speech. You can see a glimpse of that hate speech in the excerpt above; the comment in its entirety tacitly and overtly stands in support of violence against women, and particularly against women who dare to call themselves feminists. I assume the commenter perceived me as a lesbian, and the commenter’s vitriol also contains homophobic undertones–possibly even overtones, because what would a lesbian hate more than getting slapped with a limp penis, amiright guys!!! har har har.

Seriously: Misogyny isn’t funny, it’s disgusting. And hate speech is not permitted anywhere on this website.
